Movie Madness - Poolboy: Drowning Out the Fury | Arts & Culture
I have a feeling the following contains spoilers:
A movie comes along every once in awhile that makes me wonder “How much paint thinner did they huff to write this film?” Deep from the bowels of Netflix comes Poolboy: Drowning Out the Fury.
The movie stars Kevin Sorbo, Danny Trejo, and Mark Curry and no this film wasn’t made in 1996 when these actors actually had careers and loving families. This was made in 2011.
PLOT: In this unearthed lost movie from 1990 that the studio deemed too terrible to release, a Vietnam Veteran Sal Bando (Sorbo), tortured by his past as a Poolboy returns home to Van Nuys, California, and a country he doesn't recognize, in which it seems only Mexicans run pool-cleaning companies. Bando sets off on a brutal mission to reclaim his "rightful" vocation and enact revenge on the man (Trejo) who killed his wife and son.
…That surprisingly sums it up. Let me begin by saying this is one of the most off the wall hilarious movies I’ve seen in awhile. It doesn’t go by any form or code. You watch your regular Apatow or McKay comedies and you think they’re wacky and crazy but that’s because they improv some lines and scenes while still maintaining a ‘safe structure’. This film goes in the vein of movies such as The Comebacks and The Goods: Live Hard Sell Hard and those are not adult films. (Look them up…with your parent’s permission)
The movie is obviously in on itself and makes fun late 80’s early 90’s action films. The off the wall part comes from the fake director in the movie, Saint James St. James, and Poolboy. The rest of the cast does their part well and the film is just zany and can barely contain itself. Not everyone may like this film but I surely did. It’s definitely an independent feature and goes against the big budget studios.
The only part I didn’t really enjoy was Jason Mewes who plays Poolboy’s stunt double in the movie. I’m not saying Jason isn’t funny but it was just sad to watch. He looked different and I couldn’t put my finger on it but I did a lot of research at the local library…only kidding I googled it. Turns out Mewes had a terrible substance abuse problem, which caused his teeth to fall out faster than when my cousin had a taffy addiction. Needless to say he is back on his feet but not without a physical reminder and he wears dentures which saddens me.
Overall this movie has so many one liners and I want to tell them to you but I don’t want to spoil it or get sued. My personal rating for this film is 3 Michael Hursts who played Iolaus in Hercules but I think I will give the more accurate rating of 2 Michael Hursts for the viewer.
